What to Do During a Dental Emergency

Are you experiencing a toothache, broken tooth, or other dental emergency? Knowing the first steps to take could make the difference in saving your tooth or having to get it replaced.

The first step to treating a dental emergency is getting to the dentist within the first hour. If you have broken or chipped a tooth, place the fragment of your tooth in a cup of saline or milk. An avulsed (“knocked out”) tooth can be gently rinsed and placed back into the socket. The key is to have a dentist treat the site of the emergency within 60 minutes, for the best possible outcome. In many cases, the fractured portion of tooth can be bonded back into place. Knocked out teeth may be able to be splinted until they can reattach.

Facial swelling is another alarming sign to be on the lookout for. Swelling can be caused by underlying conditions like an abscessed tooth. If you have put off treatment such as a filling or root canal, you may find that the tooth never hurts until the infection becomes severe – resulting in pain and swelling. Apply a warm compress over the area for 10-15 minutes and then alternate with a cold compress. Taking an anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen can help. The key is to seek professional care immediately.
